Wounded Game Recovery with Dogs

Rainy Day's Wounded Game Tracking

Whether it's recovering your trophy or confirming a clean miss, tracking with a dog provides answers when the trail runs cold.

Not every shot leads to an easy recovery. A deer can still travel farther than expected, leaving little blood or sign to follow.

Respect the Hunt. Respect the Game. Call for a Tracking Dog.

Why Call a Tracking Dog?

Recover More Game -

Dogs have an incredible sense of smell. They are able to smell where the deer has been without any visual signs. Tracking dogs prevent waste by finding Deer/Elk that would otherwise be lost.

Peace of mind -

Even if recovery isn’t possible, a track can provide reassurance that the deer is likely still alive and capable of surviving injury and not left suffering.

Ethical Hunting -

Using a tracking dog honors the game you pursue and upholds the values of responsible hunting.

TIPS FOR HUNTERS AFTER THE SHOT

To give your Deer/Elk the best chance of recovery:

  • Mark the Spot - Note exactly where the deer was standing when you shot.

  • Wait Before Tracking - Don't rush in; give the deer time depending on the hit.

  • Observe Closely - Watch how the deer runs, reacts and where it disappears.

  • Mark Evidence - Flag blood, hair, or tracks but avoid disturbing the trail. Using flagging tape, GPS coordinates, or OnX if able

  • Don’t Grid Search - Too much human scent can make tracking harder for the dog

  • Call Early - the sooner a tracking dog starts, the better the chance of recovery.

THINGS WE MIGHT NEED FROM YOU

  • Pictures of blood where the Deer/Elk was standing when hit.

  • Archery hunters - pictures of blood on arrow (if arrow is found)

  • Making sure to mark where blood has already been found.

  • Having permission ahead of time to search on private properties.
